On 12 May 2017 I’m ten years old, and I talk my mother into letting me skip school, for a talk by Federico Marchetti, founder of YOOX and, at the time, chairman and CEO of YOOX Net-a-Porter, a group that would close that year with over €2 billion in revenue. I sit there transfixed: the stories, the vision, the sheer stubbornness. At one point he recalls standing in front of Bill Gates for the first time as a young man, he admired him so much that he asked him for a selfie. At the end of the talk, carrying the same nerve, I walk up and ask him for exactly the same thing. I still keep that photo.
